Three of Cups

A Three of any suit tells the story of the union of two parts to create a third unique entity. The number Three in tarot has strong ties to the Planet Mercury, which is the planet of mind and mouth. This shows that these cards refer to matters of communication and creative expression. This card also has strong ties to the Cancer astrological sign, symbolizing a nurturing and protective nature. The Cups suit would point towards an emotional journey- a new relationship, a new friendship, a new creative project.

The Three of Cups card shows three women toasting their goblets in celebration. They appear to be jovial and even dancing around each other. The flower wreathes adorning their heads show success and victory. This is truly a happy time for the women and the fruit on the ground shows the abundance of harvest they’re currently experiencing. The colors they are wearing are reminiscent of three characters we’ve already seen in the Major Arcana: Strength (white), Justice (red), and Temperance (orange). This points to integrity, balance and compassion as we know to be some of the traditional meanings of those cards.

Upright: Celebration, collaboration, creativity

The card indicates a social time- whether it be a wedding, birthday or other celebration is on the horizon. It can indicate a reunion with an old friend. The Three of Cups is still has strong ties to Mercury, which could point at a creative collaboration, like an art or pottery class. It can be one of the harder cards to apply to your life, however it always points to company and comradery.

Reversed: Independence, partying, alone time

When the Three of Cups card is reversed, it can show that you haven’t had much of a social life. You either have been mostly staying home or emotionally isolated. You could be losing touch with some of your close friends. This card can also indicate gossip that may be deep within your social circle, forcing you closer to self isolation. See this card as a reminder to continue watering your friendships and seek counsel from close friends. You will need the support of friends to return to the social scene after a time of self isolation.
